Double Page Spread Analysis

Double Page Spread Analysis

The Denotation of the spread is a review of ‘The Vaccines’ from the music magazine ‘NME.’ This spread is to give a review of new and popular bands that are making a reputation for themselves. NME is a well-respected music magazine so for a band to get a review in the prestigious magazine must mean they are making an impact of the musical industry.

The colour scheme of this spread is white and blue; these colours complement each other because the blue is eye catching against the white background. The white has connotations of being simple in this context, like a blank canvas waiting to be painted whatever colour the band wants. This is supported by the pull quote, “We are a pop band and we want to be a pop band” this tells listeners that they are ‘not trying to be something they are not’ and ‘They are what they are.’ The blue in the spread really doesn't have any connotations and is simply part of the pages design and used to highlight areas of interest on the page.

About 2/3 of the page is filled with a main image of the four members of the band. Each wearing quite colorless clothing and almost blend into the ‘coffee stained’ back ground. This quite a retro and classic good suggesting the band play more old school style of music. The Bands expressions are emotionless and almost patronizing because the vocalist is leaning down like he is looking down on someone. The camera shot is a mid-shot with the entire band from the waist up holding their instruments. The camera angle is at an eye-level angle however this angle still making the band appear dominate and intimidating. A filter was used in the photo for that certain style and feel the article was going for.

A large bold font is used for the main title of the article “The Vaccines.” The name of the band is in the largest font in the entire page and is simple and easy to read. This is used so people who flick through the magazine looking for key words and band names will flick past the page and if they have an interest in that band will stop and read the page. The rest of the text is very small and in columns apart from the pull quote in the middle of the last column that is highlighted in blue as a point of interest. In the top right hand side of the page there is a small piece of text saying, “The Radar issue 2011” meaning that this is a single review out of a series of different interviews of popular bands.

This article was written early in The Vaccine musical career and the strap line states that “They've been together for under a year, but are already being talked up as the biggest guitar band of 2011. This links with the use of White and a blank canvas, they are just beginning so it is their actions that will define them as a band.
