Music Magazines Masthead Ideas

Masthead Ideas

I started by experimenting with several different fonts on publisher and find what fonts I prefer. I found 7 fonts that I liked and then I expanded on them. I wanted to go for an aged look for my masthead so people will interpret the magazine as experienced. My favorite font  is 'Birth of a hero' and I think it will be my final font for my masthead however I have to experiment with it to get my final masthead.

Summer Festival Photos

These photos are very useful for features in my magazine because one of my main features will be reviews of festivals from 2013. The feature will contain reviews from students about the festivals from the previous summer and help them to decide on what festivals to attend in the summer of 2014. The review will include the reviews of the acts, music and the quality of the festival ground themselves, such as them campsites where people will be staying for the festival. The pictures I am using show what it is like when the artists are preforming and the conditions of the living areas. These pictures will help show someone who is looking for or someone who has never been to a festival what that certain festival is like.

Magazine Contents Page Analysis

Magazine Contents Page Analysis

The Denotation of this is Contents page is that is a Contents Page of a music magazine known as ‘NME’. NME is a popular and well respected music magazine that is one of the top selling magazines in its chosen genre. This means when someone picks up the magazine and wants to learn about what’s in the magazine they will look at the contents page for a quick overview of what in the magazine so the contents page is very important.

NME usual has its own signature colour scheme on the front cover and contents page. The colour scheme of NME is typically red black and white. The connotations of red could be rage, anger, love, blood, power and courage. Red is also a very classic colour and very popular, in the contents I think it is used because it is a popular colour and represents power. Black has connotations of death, darkness, night and has a smart/classy feel. I feel like NME has used this colour because it is a classic colour and tells the reader that this magazine is classy and genuine. The white is used as the background but is also there to brighten up the page and take away the negative connotations of the read and the black used. They have used black for the text and red for points of interest on the page, this is used because the red stands out against the black and white.

The pull quote in the center of the page says “it’s the heaviest thing I’ve ever done” this quote is underneath a picture of Miles Kane this is an example of anchorage. This will interest reader who like or are interested in Miles Kane because the quotes tell the reader that Kane has recorded ‘Heaviest’ material and means that he is doing something slightly different to his preferred genre. The text underneath the pull quote says “Miles Kane packs the punches with part two of our albums 2013 preview, pretty tasty” This shows us that this is part 2 of an album preview for Kane’s new album. Meaning there was a part 1 of the album preview meaning readers will be anxious to find part two and see the rest of the preview so that is why the editors have put this pull quote in the centre of the contents page.

In the bottom right corner there is a advert that is used to get people to subscribe to the NME magazine. They are using the offer of a discount of 42% off to help sell subscriptions. This advert is in red because it is a point of interest. 7 images are used overall and it is obvious that this contents page relies greatly on images. There are many images because at a glance this page looks allot more interesting that it would if it were all text. Each image has a caption underneath to explain what the image is, as well as a page number on the image to tell the reader where to find the page and image that the caption describes. Most of the pictures are close shots and mid shots and only have one person in. These images also go well with the colour scheme. For example one image is in black and white and Miles Kane is wearing read and sitting in a theater full of read chairs. The rest of the image have white backgrounds and are wearing dark clothing.

Contents Page Finish Product

Evaluation

The theme, style and colour scheme are all the same as my front cover. I think that my contents page looks very professional with a well planned layout. The two pictures are my own original images. I feel like all the information is positioned well on the pages and the content is relevant to the target audience. I very happy with the way I have edited the images and text and used a semi-transparent banner to put text on my images.

I feel like I should have used a different font for my page numbers because they don't look as simple as the rest of the magazine. I should of spread more text out and given my self more room for text at the bottom of the page.

In conclusion I am very pleased with my contents pages because I wanted it to look very professional and it came out like I pictured in my head. I would of done some minor things differently but apart from that i am very happy with my work.
