Music Magazines Masthead Ideas
Masthead Ideas
I started by experimenting with several different fonts on publisher and find what fonts I prefer. I found 7 fonts that I liked and then I expanded on them. I wanted to go for an aged look for my masthead so people will interpret the magazine as experienced. My favorite font is 'Birth of a hero' and I think it will be my final font for my masthead however I have to experiment with it to get my final masthead.
Summer Festival Photos
These photos are very useful for features in my magazine because one of my main features will be reviews of festivals from 2013. The feature will contain reviews from students about the festivals from the previous summer and help them to decide on what festivals to attend in the summer of 2014. The review will include the reviews of the acts, music and the quality of the festival ground themselves, such as them campsites where people will be staying for the festival. The pictures I am using show what it is like when the artists are preforming and the conditions of the living areas. These pictures will help show someone who is looking for or someone who has never been to a festival what that certain festival is like.

Magazine Contents Page Analysis
Magazine Contents Page Analysis
The Denotation of this is Contents page is that is a Contents
Page of a music magazine known as ‘NME’. NME is a popular and well respected
music magazine that is one of the top selling magazines in its chosen genre.
This means when someone picks up the magazine and wants to learn about what’s
in the magazine they will look at the contents page for a quick overview of what
in the magazine so the contents page is very important.
NME usual has its own signature colour scheme on the front
cover and contents page. The colour scheme of NME is typically red black and
white. The connotations of red could be rage, anger, love, blood, power and
courage. Red is also a very classic colour and very popular, in the contents I think
it is used because it is a popular colour and represents power. Black has connotations
of death, darkness, night and has a smart/classy feel. I feel like NME has used
this colour because it is a classic colour and tells the reader that this
magazine is classy and genuine. The white is used as the background but is also
there to brighten up the page and take away the negative connotations of the
read and the black used. They have used black for the text and red for points
of interest on the page, this is used because the red stands out against the
black and white.
The pull quote in the center of the page says “it’s the
heaviest thing I’ve ever done” this quote is underneath a picture of Miles Kane
this is an example of anchorage. This will interest reader who like or are interested
in Miles Kane because the quotes tell the reader that Kane has recorded ‘Heaviest’
material and means that he is doing something slightly different to his preferred
genre. The text underneath the pull quote says “Miles Kane packs the punches
with part two of our albums 2013 preview, pretty tasty” This shows us that this
is part 2 of an album preview for Kane’s new album. Meaning there was a part 1
of the album preview meaning readers will be anxious to find part two and see
the rest of the preview so that is why the editors have put this pull quote in
the centre of the contents page.
In the bottom right corner
there is a advert that is used to get people to subscribe to the NME magazine.
They are using the offer of a discount of 42% off to help sell subscriptions.
This advert is in red because it is a point of interest. 7 images are used
overall and it is obvious that this contents page relies greatly on images.
There are many images because at a glance this page looks allot more interesting
that it would if it were all text. Each image has a caption underneath to
explain what the image is, as well as a page number on the image to tell the
reader where to find the page and image that the caption describes. Most of the
pictures are close shots and mid shots and only have one person in. These
images also go well with the colour scheme. For example one image is in black
and white and Miles Kane is wearing read and sitting in a theater full of read
chairs. The rest of the image have white backgrounds and are wearing dark
clothing.

Contents Page Finish Product
Evaluation
The theme, style and colour scheme are all the same as my front cover. I think that my contents page looks very professional with a well planned layout. The two pictures are my own original images. I feel like all the information is positioned well on the pages and the content is relevant to the target audience. I very happy with the way I have edited the images and text and used a semi-transparent banner to put text on my images.
I feel like I should have used a different font for my page numbers because they don't look as simple as the rest of the magazine. I should of spread more text out and given my self more room for text at the bottom of the page.
In conclusion I am very pleased with my contents pages because I wanted it to look very professional and it came out like I pictured in my head. I would of done some minor things differently but apart from that i am very happy with my work.

Double Page Spread Analysis
Double Page Spread Analysis
The Denotation
of the spread is a review of ‘The Vaccines’ from the music magazine ‘NME.’ This
spread is to give a review of new and popular bands that are making a reputation
for themselves. NME is a well-respected music magazine so for a band to get a
review in the prestigious magazine must mean they are making an impact of the
musical industry.
The colour scheme
of this spread is white and blue; these colours complement each other because the
blue is eye catching against the white background. The white has connotations
of being simple in this context, like a blank canvas waiting to be painted whatever
colour the band wants. This is supported by the pull quote, “We are a pop band
and we want to be a pop band” this tells listeners that they are ‘not trying to
be something they are not’ and ‘They are what they are.’ The blue in the spread
really doesn't have any connotations and is simply part of the pages design and
used to highlight areas of interest on the page.
About 2/3 of
the page is filled with a main image of the four members of the band. Each
wearing quite colorless clothing and almost blend into the ‘coffee stained’ back
ground. This quite a retro and classic good suggesting the band play more old
school style of music. The Bands expressions are emotionless and almost patronizing because the vocalist is leaning down like he is looking down on someone. The
camera shot is a mid-shot with the entire band from the waist up holding their
instruments. The camera angle is at an eye-level angle however this angle still
making the band appear dominate and intimidating. A filter was used in the
photo for that certain style and feel the article was going for.
A large bold
font is used for the main title of the article “The Vaccines.” The name of the
band is in the largest font in the entire page and is simple and easy to read.
This is used so people who flick through the magazine looking for key words and
band names will flick past the page and if they have an interest in that band
will stop and read the page. The rest of the text is very small and in columns
apart from the pull quote in the middle of the last column that is highlighted
in blue as a point of interest. In the top
right hand side of the page there is a small piece of text saying, “The Radar
issue 2011” meaning that this is a single review out of a series of different interviews
of popular bands.
This article
was written early in The Vaccine musical career and the strap line states that “They've been together for under a year, but are already being talked up as the biggest guitar
band of 2011. This links with the use of White and a blank canvas, they are
just beginning so it is their actions that will define them as a band.

Magazine Front Cover Finished Product
Evaluation
Over all I believe that my magazine cover and contents pages look good and I have covered conventions of a good magazine criteria. I think that my colour scheme of white and blue. Along side with my simple design and font makes a good magazine cover. The main image I have uses a direct address and the clothes of the subject also match my colour scheme. My secondary images are my original photos and link with the secondary cover stories and title of the article. I am very pleased with my image of the apps on the front cover because I had to format and edit the images so they would not have a white background behind them, which would clash with my white background.
However if I could change and improve my work I would of used a more professional photo for the main image and try to make my pug look more professional.I think if I would of used photo shop to create a more professional looking pug and secondary images. I would of used better more vibrant pictures for my secondary images.
In conclusion I am very pleased with both my front cover and contents pages and I would only change small details on my front cover. such as the clarity of the text that was used at an angle and some part of the text having to be different colours so they could be seen on a white surface on the main image.

Front Cover Magazine Analysis
The colour
scheme of this magazine is brown, yellow and white. These colours have
connotations. The dark brown colours could connote that the band has depth. The
band are mostly wearing dark/brown clothing and they are have brown hair this
could show that they are an original band that are natural and are not trying
to be anything special unlike some popular music personalities. This is a
statement saying, ‘They are what they are’ and are not trying to be anything
they are not. The Yellow and light in the back ground of the front cover could
symbolise they rise to musical fame. This is supported by the Strap Line. This
is Anchorage the Strap Line says “How Britain’s best band finally broke
through” and the light in the background shows that light is finally broke
through.
The Pull
Quote states, “Never Compromise” this is a quote from the band and tells the
viewer that no matter what ‘The Horrors’ have never sold out or compromised.
They have stuck to their chosen path and will never do anything that could
potential ruin their Music and that all they care about, the music. The Main
image is a mixture of direct and indirect addresses. Three band members are
looking directly at the reader and the other two are looking somewhere off
frame. This could suggest they are looking at something like an audience of
people.
The Promos
is a contest that has the chance to allow you to win tickets to Reading and
Leeds music festivals. This catches the reader’s eye and
could help sell the magazine. Other hooking techniques are used such as more
pull quotes like “it’s going to be special” fans of Nirvana will be interested
to find out about Nirvana’s reissues. The use of recent news is also used such
as Amy Winehouse’s death is used as a hooking device.
The Pull
Quote “Never Compromise” is Ploysemy because it could have several different
meanings. It could be used to tell the reader that the band with always be
original and not sell out to compromise their music. It could also be
interpreted as a message to readers so they can stay true to who they are and
don’t give in to other people. Most of the Cover shares the same Text and only
the Masthead and the Strap line has different text.
The Main
image is a mid shot of the entire band and only captures them from the waist up
which differs from most magazine covers which use a Close up of the subject.
However when there is a band of the front cover, a mid shot is usually used.

Contact Sheet
The Images with crosses are the images I am not going to use. This is because the are at diffrent angles that would not be suitable for a magazine cover or the subject is pulling a face. I want a direct address so any pictures with the subject looking away from the camera I can't use.
The images with Ticks by them are photos that are suitable for the cover of my magazine. This is becuase they are all looking directly at the camera and I wanted a direct address for the main image of my magazine.

Rule Of Thirds
The Rule of Thirds
The 'rule of thirds' is a principle that photographers use to break down an image in to thirds. This allows the photographer to identify important parts of the image that should be considered being placed at points of interest when you frame your image.
